,"Therapy" from the Latin word, therapia means curing or healing. What does it heal? How do we know if we need healing?
As a child, I imagined therapy consisted of talking to a stranger about your problems. I did not understand its purpose and attempted to create an understanding of therapy but my perspective did not cast it in a positive light. When I unexpectedly decided therapy was the last resort to aid my unremitting chronic pain, I was hopeless. Through work with my therapist, my pain has gone from the foreground of my life to the background. My work in therapy has lead to my passion for therapy and ultimately, my vocation as a therapist.

Therapy creates a specific type of unique relationship, free of judgment or advice. Through the relationship we build with a therapist we can learn to have more fulfilling, authentic relationships with others. We can gain insight into struggles with anxiety, lack of motivation, behavioral issues, perfectionism, depression, and physical ailments as well.
Although I needed healing long before I entered therapy to address my chronic pain, the pain was the experience that brought me in. Sometimes, the experience will be a break-up, insomnia, or feelings of emptiness. Perhaps we go to therapy not because of an issue interfering with our life, but because we want to explore our true self.
